  • OUR HISTORY

Cyanco Has Invested Continuously to Become the Leading Global Supplier of Sodium Cyanide

Formed in 1990, Cyanco has grown from a regional chemical producer in Nevada to a global supplier – manufacturing and delivering sodium cyanide around the world.

1990

Cyanco was formed as the result of a merger between Alta Gold and MSI Group. The company, with a sodium cyanide manufacturing facility located in Winnemucca, Nevada, was formed to provide a critical mining reagent to gold and silver mines in a “ready-to-use” solution form throughout Nevada and the western United States.

1992

Degussa (which was later renamed to Evonik) acquires a 50% interest in Cyanco. The company becomes a certified member of the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care Program.

1993

Cyanco’s Applied Technology Group began providing technical and operational support to improve cyanide handling and safety, to optimize cyanide utilization and assist in mill effluent detoxification at customer sites.

1996-97

Cyanco opens a new ISO container and railcar unloading terminal in Cadillac, Quebec and commissions its second production line in Nevada to support the growing demand for solution sodium cyanide.

2000

Cyanco launches its Cyanide Train the Trainer Initiative to help mines improve their mine site safety and ensure a consistent safety message across the industry.

2006

Oaktree Capital Group acquires Cyanco and Evonik’s Canadian cyanide operations/terminal. The company’s solution cyanide production capacity is again expanded.

2010-12

The company commissions a new solid cyanide manufacturing facility in Alvin, Texas. Cyanco begins direct sales of solid and solution to Canada, Mexico, South America and Africa.

2014

Cyanco expands its solution production capacity in Nevada.

2016-17

Cyanco opens ISO container and railcar transloading terminals in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Hermosillo, Mexico.

2018

Cyanco is acquired by Cerberus Capital Management.

2020

Cyanco builds its fifth production line (solids), located at its Nevada plant, and opens a new transloading terminal in Val d’Or, Canada. The company is awarded the Chemical Transportation Safety Pinnacle Award from Union Pacific Railroad.

Cyanco is a proud member of each community in which it operates, supporting numerous not-for-profit organizations and charitable activities.

We believe the investments that companies like ours make today will help build a healthy future for the mining industry, by supporting the future workforce of technical specialists, manufacturing operators and mineral extraction professionals.

Because we believe our actions speak the loudest, we require employee participation for every community event and activity we support. There is no substitute for showing up.

Helping Feed Children in Houston

In Houston, we are supporting the ‘Kids Meals’ organization, which is currently delivering over 6,000 meals/day to children in at-risk communities. These children, who are sheltering in place due to COVID-19, may sometimes have limited access to food. The established Kids Meals network is able to feed a child for under $2/day.

Cyanco Winnemucca helped to provide food for healthcare workers

Throughout the early months of the pandemic, Cyanco delivered fresh meals twice a week to Humboldt General Hospital, in appreciation of their 200 healthcare professionals working the frontlines. Meals were provided by local businesses, in further support of our Humboldt County community.
